 "Take Off" --
August 17th.
A final checking of lists:  clothes for all seasons, medicines (allergies), groceries, cameras, laptop, GPS, kayaking gear, and of course chocolate (survival).

Next, loading of the bikes--Bob asks me to climb up into the truck bed and help support a bike as he tries to anchor it to the roof rack.  He's balancing the bike precariously; I give a big jump up--only to get caught by our rose bush.  Now, he can't move and I can't get loose from the thorns digging into my back....Chris-----CHRIS!!!!!!  (no response)   So, here we are in the driveway -- both unable to move--STUCK.    What I hope the neighbors didn't see?
Me stripping my shirt off and trying to remove the thorny branches (thank God I had a bra on today!) ...and later Bob landing on his back on the concrete in a poorly executed dismount from the truck bed.   Okay.  We've had better "take-offs".

Camped near Truckee, CA, at Snowflower CG and hiked the 2-mile easy trail around the lake.  Lots of spent wildflowers.  Evidence of how pretty the trail would be in late July (next year).

Monday, Aug 18th.
Driving across Nevada can be quite boring, but just what we needed to clear our heads so thoughts like "argh!  I forgot my rain pants" can come popping into consciousness.

Camped in Elko, Nevada.  Most people think Elko is in the middle of nowhere in the desert; however, the town sits at the edge of the Ruby Mountains.  A short drive takes you into a beautiful "little Yosemite" setting of huge granite mountains, creeks, aspens, and waterfalls.  We hiked there last spring.  Also, Elko is noted for several authentic Basque style restaurants.

Tonight, we ate at Biltoki's Basque Diner.    mmmm..... Melt-in-your-mouth lamb smothered in garlic, accompanied by an endless assortment of side platters, plus ice cream to boot.  Yes--doggy bags followed!

What's Next?   Idaho Falls--biking along the river and falls.  Hike around Shoshone Falls.  Potato Museum!  (hey--Idaho is the potato capital of the world)
