396 miles and 10 hours from our last stop

Bob & Jenny's Cross Country Adventure
Day 16 & 17
Welcome to
What's next?
Monticello, Ind.
Bob was really starting to like South Dakota with all the really nice highways and rolling hills that were abundant with golden corn until we ran into a unrelenting 30 mph headwind. Needless to say, our gas mileage really went downhill. When we talked to someone about it they said "Oh this is probably from Huricane Gustov" Well, as you can see from the picture below, it looks like the wind blows all the time in SD and Minnesota where we saw wind turbine after wind turbine.
Just a humorous note. In Cashton Wis. in an Amish community, we saw a gas engine being used to help a windmill siphon water. I guess the Amish can use gas powered equipment as long as the engine is stationary.
All the ranches have very ornate silos
Taking advantage of the wind
Here are those infamous Wisconsin cows.
Rolling hill after rolling hill of corn (everywhere)
Against the wind ...argh!
Mississippi River near La Crosse
Pleasantly surprised by two bald eagles
Hardwood trees of Wisconsin (from a bluff at Devil's' Lake). Thought we were in the jungles of Costa Rica
Beautiful Devil's Lake State park
Balanced Rock in Devil's Lake SP
Tumbling Rock in Devil's Lake SP
Devil's Lake SP:  Unusual rock formations and outcroppings are found on scenic trails throughout the park.  A moderate 4-mile hike led us to the places seen in photos above.
Next time:
Kayak on the La Crosse and Kickapoo Rivers.
Camp at Perrot SP and kayak on the Canoe Trails/nature refuge there.
