Prairie dog colonies line the road in Custer State Park.   They scurry back to their holes, and perched in a protective stance, they throw their arms high in the air with a loud chattering to warn us away.

Driving the Peter Norbeck Highway:  A NARROW mountainous road engineered so that you emerge from three tunnels with glorious views of the faces on Mt. Rushmore.

Mammoth dig site.  A tempting watering hole was actually a death trap for mammoth.  For thousands of years, their skeletons were piling up in layers -- an archeologist's dream dig!

Can you guess how many of these are females?  None!  Guess they were too smart!

This is the actual site, currently being unearthed and preserved on site for public tours.
