Bob & Jenny's Cross Country Adventure
Our day started out by leaving Mirror Lake Wis. to head for Monticello, IN. We set the GPS for Monticello via Milwaukee and Chicago- big mistake. We were able to see Lake Michigan (nice)- see pic on left, but by outskirting Chicago we managed to hit freeway construction that lasted about 30 miles. The speed limit was 45 as you can see in the lower left pic., but in order to keep up with the masses, I had to go 60 and cars and truck were whizzing by at 65-70 mph. Woo!! Then came the traffic jam. Not a good place for a Calif. RV. Let's get out of Dodge! To add salt to the wound, we went through 5 toll boths to the tune of $13.50. Boy was I happy when we left that area. Upon our arrival at Monticello IN. we were rewarded with a laid back lifestyle- whew! Oh yes, we were also hit by a big rock in the windshield, but it didn't break. Wow, were we lucky.
Very interesting Wabash and Erie Canal Historic site in Delphi, IN.
The canal which started in Toledo, OH and ended in Evanston,IL was built in the early 1800's and was funtional for about 40 years. Above is the canal with the path for the horse that pulled the boats. There were 468 miles of canals and 73 locks. Good history here if you are interrested.
